The King Charles Inn, Click to Enlarge Your 3 day trip into America's royal past begins with checking into the newly restored King Charles Inn, located on Meeting Street in the heart of Charleston's historic district. The Inn itself (circa 1830) is a part of Charleston's history and has provided respite to many visitors throughout the years, including Edgar Allen Poe. In addition, the King Charles Inn was recently featured in Southern Living Magazine.

The Heyward-Washington House, Click to Enlarge After lunch, stroll around the corner into a time when American royalty Dared to challenge their English brethren. The time, of course, was the time of American Independence and no city captured the spirit more than Charleston. It is easy to imagine yourself living in that time as you tour the Heyward-Washington House, built in 1772, home to Thomas Heyward Jr., signer of the Declaration of Independence. When George Washington visited Charleston in 1791, the house was rented for his use. Located in the original walled portion of the city, the neighborhood was used by Dubose Heyward as the setting for Porgy and Bess. The day ends with dinner at Meritage.

As seen on America's Castles, the Joseph Manigault House, built in 1803, is one of the country's premier examples of neo-classical architecture.
