Boone Hall Plantation
A magnificent estate of 738 acres. A highlight of the plantation is the majestic avenue of live oaks planted in 1743 by Captain Thomas Boone. The plantation mansion is of Georgian architecture. Original plantation buildings include nine 18th-century slave cabins and the gin house used for processing cotton. Used so extensively in motion picture and television filming, as well as in worldwide publications, it has become known as "America's Most Photographed Plantation."

Historic House Museums:

Edmondston-Alston House

One of the first dwellings built on Charleston's High Battery in 1825 by Charles Edmondston, a prosperous merchant and wharf owner. In 1838 Charles Alston purchased the house and added Greek Revival details to the architecture. Look seaward from the second floor piazza where General Beauregard watched the bombardment of Fort Sumter. Alston family furniture, silver, books, and paintings remain in place much as they have for over 150 years. (See Taylored Tours)

The Heyward-Washington House, built in 1772, was the home of Thomas Heyward, Jr., signer of the Declaration of Independence. When George Washington visited Charleston in 1791, the house was rented for his use. Furnished with magnificent Charleston-made furniture, the collection includes the priceless Holmes Bookcase, considered to be the finest example of American-made furniture in existence today. The exquisite formal garden is comprised of plants available to Charlestonians during that period. Located in the original walled portion of the city, the neighborhood was used by Dubose Heyward as the setting for Porgy and Bess.

The Joseph Manigault house, built in 1803, is a premier example of neo-classical architecture. Designed by gentlemen architect Gabriel Manigault for his brother Joseph, the house is one of the most distinguished in the city, capturing the lifestyle of the wealthy, rice-planting family. The interior reflects an outstanding collection of American, English and French furnishings of the period. A charming Gate Temple is the focus of the period garden. The Joseph Manigault House has been featured on America's Castles and is located across the street from Charleston Museum.

Nathaniel Russell House

Charleston's most beautiful example of Neoclassical architecture, this house was built in 1808 by Nathaniel Russell, a prominent merchant from Rhode Island. The astonishing free flying staircase spirals unsupported from floor to floor, and the tier of beautiful south rooms have elliptical plans, complemented by some of the finest examples of period furnishings and decorative arts. The Harbor of History Tour is an all-inclusive tour of Charleston's beautiful world famous Harbor aboard The Nautical Queen, Charleston's only paddlewheel vessel. The tour covers 30 miles on the harbor. You will see all of the beautiful homes along Rainbow Row and the Battery, where you will have an unobstructed view of the antebellum mansions. The captain will amuse you with true stories of piracy before, during, and after the Civil War. Cruise right by the USS Yorktown, the Cooper River Bridge, Waterfront park, Aquarium, and Charleston Maritime Center.

Charleston Harbor Tour leaves form "The Historic District". Nautical Queen is located just across from the Customs House. Deli snack bar is on board with sandwiches and beverages.
